From 9 June: 'In the Shadow of Victory'

IN DE SCHADUW VAN DE VICTORIE

From Alkmaar the Victory! That's how it says in the books - for almost four and a half centuries. On October 8, 1573, the Spanish troops gave up the siege of Alkmaar. In this way it became the first city in Holland that had managed to hold out in the fight against king-dictator Philip II.

But what suffering and misery that war brought to the countryside around the fortified towns! The villagers were literally caught between two fires. On the one hand, the rebellious Geuzen, often strictly Calvinistic and therefore not only anti-Spanish, but also fanatically anti-Catholic. On the other hand, the Spanish armies, who hunted the "heretics" and who just as well plundered, robbed and wreaked havoc. From 1571 (the first raid by the Geuzen on Egmond aan Zee) to 1576 (the last raid by the Spaniards beyond Schoorl), the battle wavered back and forth. This exhibition shows the three Egmonds, Bergen and Schoorl in the shadow of the Victory.
